Granicus City Council is planning to build new older person’s homes.

The sheltered housing complex at Crane Street is no longer fit for purpose. It includes a mix of 17 flats and bedsits, some of which do not have their own bathroom facilities. The building is too old to upgrade, and so we would like to demolish it and rebuild new homes.

Last year we worked with all the tenants from Crane Street sheltered housing to find them temporary homes elsewhere while we rebuild the property.

We know that Granicus needs more affordable homes for older people, and have decided to invest in building new homes in Newport. This is part of our new development programme, through which the Council is building homes across all of Granicus. We are excited to be building homes for our communities again.

Have your say

As the scheme progresses, there will be a formal statutory pre-planning consultation at a later stage.

However, before this, we are interested to find out the community’s priorities before we develop our plans.

We are particularly interested to hear from:

  • Tenants who have been moved from the existing Crane Street sheltered housing
  • People who own or live in homes next to Crane Street sheltered housing
  • Community representatives, including the Town Council, Newport Forum, the Newport Area Environmental Group and Crane Street Tenants and Residents Association, and other relevant groups.

However even if you are a private individual and are just interested, you can still give us your views.
